About Joe Roma: Joe is a graduate of Binghamton University where he received his Bachelor of Music degree with Honors. He studied drumming as a teen with Ken Craig, a graduate of the Navy School of Music and a highly respected drummer. Further study took place in New York City with both Joe Morello (of the famed Dave Brubeck Quartet) and Ed Shaugnessy (drummer with Johnny Carson's Tonight Show). Joe is also fortunate to have studied with drummer/clinician/author/entrepreneur Roy Burns. College percussion study was with David Buttolph, a graduate of Yale University and the Juilliard School, and student of the New York Philharmonic's long-time timpanist, Saul Goodman. Further college percussion study took place with Christian Granger, a graduate of Ted Frazeur's percussion program at Fredonia State University. Joe was a member of the Binghamton University Music Department for 8 years, conducting the University Percussion Ensemble and teaching percussion lessons. He founded Joe's Drum Shop in Johnson City and had a successful business there for 21 years. He is currently on the Music Department faculty at SUNY-Broome, teaching Applied Music lessons. He performs as Principal Timpanist with the Tri-Cities Opera orchestra and on the drum set with the Joe Roma Trio and the Miles Ahead Jazz Quartet. He is a private drum and percussion instructor at McNeil Music in Vestal, NY, and a certified NYSSMA adjudicator. Joe has performed with the Binghamton Philharmonic, Tri-Cities Opera, BC Pops, Binghamton Community Orchestra, Ice Capades, Disney World on Ice and Cider Mill Playhouse. Artists he has performed with in concert include Dionne Warwick, Clark Terry, Urbie Green, Frank Wess, Houston Person, Erskine Hawkins, Marvin Stamm, Ingrid Jensen, Lew Soloff, Slam Stewart, Cat Anderson, Rufus Reid, Eddie Allen, Eddie Daniels, Tia Fuller, Ken McIntyre, Steve Davis, Camille Thurman, Mike Davis, Tony Kadleck, Bob Dorough, Steve Weisberg, Eilleen Farrell, Richard Stolzman and members of the Lenox Quartet. He has performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, the dedication of the New York State Governmental Plaza in Albany, Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, the dedication (and 25th anniversary!) of the Broome County Veterans memorial Arena, Pops on the River and the Glenora Winery's Jazz Series. |
